Valentine's Day

In addition to our regular menu, we are having a special 'All Red' Valentine's Day menu. It is being served on Thursday, February 14th through Saturday, February 16th.

We will have Filet, Red Snaper, Bourbon BBQ Chicken and a Vodka-Tomato Cream Sauce over Penne Pasta. We'll also have two great 'red' desserts - Strawberries and Cream plus a Red Velvet Cake.

We are filling up fast, especially for Saturday, so please call 828-697-5350 to make your reservation today!

Great News!

Trip Advisor announced today that Asheville is the No. 1 pick of its fall foliage destinations. We can't wait for all the tourists to make a side journey to Hendersonville. We welcome you!

It has been a great summer. We've been busy with customers and busy working on our new menu that we hope to introduce within the next couple of weeks.

Our mural is taking shape really nicely. It will be great when it is complete. Do stop in just to have a look if you are on Main Street. Or check out it's progress on the link above entitled 'Our Mural'.

We're Back!

It has been a month since we last posted. So much has happened. The town is getting busier which is great, but we have also had alot of personal issues with staff and their families. We've had surgeries, hospitalizations, sickness - you name it! Everyone is better now and hopefully you'll be reading regular posts again.

Father's Day is just around the corner and we are already beginning to fill up with reservations. Please call soon to assure you will have a table waiting.

Another Great Day? You Betcha!

Greetings to all on a beautiful Monday morning. We're looking forward to a great week, expecially Thursday being a participant in the Dining Out for Life campaign. Do join us and support this great charity. We're open all day for lunch and dinner.

OK. Saturday night we were packed. Many people attending 'Annie' at the Skyland Performing Arts Center and others attending the Flat Rock Playhouse. Most tables did not have reservations and as a consequence, we could not serve you quite as promptly as we wanted to. We pride ourselves on our 'made from scratch difference' (cooking most everything to order) and our service. Please make reservations if you are coming with a group and have time constraints. On Friday and Saturday evenings, we advise allowing yourselves two (2) hours to have a nice meal with us and get on your way to your destination.

We are working this week on a salmon tasting. Similar to our popular curry tasting, this will allow you to taste Norwegian, Scottish and Alaskan salmon all at the same time. Check back for the exact dates.

Our 'Meatless Meatloaf' is now on the menu. This was so popular during the Small Plate Crawl that we have put it on the menu. So in addition to our normal gluten-free meatloaf, we now offer a vegetarian version, served with our cajun remoulade. Delicious!

Don't forget! We now have Tomato Basil and Cream of Mushroom soup every day. We will do a third soup that will change from day-to-day. And as asked for by our customers, we are now offering a 'Trio of Soup' with French Bread for $8.95. So many people enjoy our soups and since this is a 'soup town', stop in for all three of our delicious homemade soups.

It's Going to be a Great Day!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We can’t say it enough. The Small Plate Crawl was an astounding success. We want to say a big thank you to everyone who came, to all the new friends we made and we hope you will all keep your promise to come back again. It was our pleasure to serve you. You see, we all love what we do.

Another big thank you goes out to the Hendersonville Epicurean. She has done a wonderful job and we are so looking forward to the next Small Plate Crawl in the fall. Be sure to visit her site to keep up with the latest happenings with the restaurant scene here in Hendersonville and beyond.

As you may have noticed, we said thank you three times. Our third thanks goes to all of our staff who worked hard to make this a successful event. As I said before, we all love what we do. We love to cook and we love to serve. I hope it shows.

OK. Everyone really enjoyed the Mushroom Meatloaf, so much so that a vast majority of those who ordered it went out of their way to suggest that it be on the menu all the time. Yes, it is a vegetarian meatloaf and I was quite skeptical about even doing it. Like we said on the menu – “We promise you won’t miss the meat!” and I guess you didn’t. We will be adding it to the menu in the next week or so.

Now for the curry. Everyone who had it really enjoyed it and liked the idea of being able to try three different versions simultaneously. It was a fun thing to do but very time consuming. We will probably offer a curry dish as a special, but not so sure about putting it on the menu. Perhaps we’ll have a “Curry Day’ every week or a “Curry Weekend” every month. What do folks think of that? Please use the comment button at the end of this post and let us know your thoughts.

Anonymous and More

Thank you Anonymous for looking at our blog. We don't know who you are, but thank you for continuing to look. Please keep in touch.

Sometimes it's hard to hold your nerve in this business. A gorgeous day on Sunday and we were empty. A gorgeous day on Monday and we were packed. Another beautiful day on Tuesday and we did ok, not great but ok. Planning and ordering is still not easy as we are just easing our way into summer.

Our Dining Out for Life ambassador stopped by yesterday with promotional materials. He is a great guy and we are looking forward to April 29. Do come in, join us and help support this wonderful charity.

We are looking forward to Hendersonville's second Small Plate Crawl. We're being different this year and have gone out on a bit of a limb. Instead of having small plates from our regular menu fare, we're trying a couple new things. One is a Mushroom Meatloaf with Cajun Remoulade. This meatloaf is packed with mushrooms (of course), walnuts, cheddar cheese and rice. When we have offered it as a vegetarian dish, it was very well received. We hope you will enjoy it.

We are also going to have a curry tasting during the Small Plate Crawl. We will be sampling a Thai curry, an Indian curry and a Japanese curry. They will all be made with chicken so the taste differences should be discernable.

Yes, we'll have a lot more than the meatloof and curries. We look forward to serving you.

Where Do I Begin?

OK. Sometimes we just have to throw our hands up in the air and say that we disappointed some of our customers. There were some who came for Easter Lunch and left disappointed. For that, we are sorry. We all love to cook, create wonderful dishes and please our customers. That is what we are here for.

Those of you who know us and are "regulars" know that we are one of the most consistent restaurants in town. That is one of the biggest compliments we get. People tell us that they will always bring out of town guests because they know it will be good - time after time after time.

Today however, there are several of you who left disappointed. And you were disappointed in our lamb. We heard your complaints and criticisms. What you were looking for, we did not provide. We want you back to give you what you were looking for and what all of our other customers have come to expect and do receive.

Enough said. It's the start of another week. We will write again, sooner rather than later.

Another Week

It's the start of another week. Can you believe Thursday will be the 1st of April already? Spring is well and truly on the way and we survived the winter. Thank you Lord.

March Madness should be over this weekend. Funny, but our two best days last week were Tuesday and Wednesday. Both days when there was no basketball on. Usually our best days are Friday and Saturday. Tuesday has historically been our worst day of the week. You don't realize just how many things can affect your business.

We'll be running some interesting specials this week. We're working on a Green Chicken Curry, loaded with vegetables and served over rice.

It's 1pm and we're having a slight lull. The Sweet Chili Pork Wrap has been a huge hit! Maybe we'll try it with chicken next or wrap it in a large Romain leaf. Yum!

Gotta go now. People walking in. No, not just people, but lots of people!

Spring to Snow in 48 Hours

To think it was in the upper 60's on Saturday and by Monday afternoon we were watching big snowflakes falling on Main Street. Monday night was a disaster. Dull, dismal and with a "wintry mix" falling from the skies.

We had a couple come in from Iowa who had attended the NASCAR race in Bristol on Sunday. They were saying how many empty seats there were this year. As a matter of fact, they heard it was the first time in 55 years the race wasn't sold out. The recession is still with us. I understood how one could travel from Iowa to Bristol for the race, but was intrigued how they ended up in Hendersonville. They explained that a friend from school retired to Hendersonville and they came to try and locate him. In the end, they could not, so came to Main Street. They figured as long as they were in town, they might as well spend a few hours seeing what it was all about. It's always interesting to me how people end up in our restaurant.

We are feverishly working on our menu for the Small Plate Crawl. I need to get it into the Hendersonville Epicurean so it can be posted on their website. Look for a couple new and exciting dishes. We are working hard to be really well organized this time. We had a fabulous turnout on a miserable and rainy day in November and can only imagine what it will be like on a gorgeous spring day. I hope we can pull it off without too many glitches. Hendersonville Epicurean surveyed the participants last time and we received good feedback, much of which we took seriously. The participants told us what they thought and did show up some flaws in the system. Believe it or not, many of us do listen to constructive criticism.

A Happy Heart, A Heavy Heart

It is with a happy heart and a heavy heart that I publish this page. For those of you who know us, we are more than a restaurant, we are more than a place to eat. We are a little community located at the corner of 5th and Main. We greet our customer with hugs. We laugh together. And sometimes we cry together.

This morning we received a disturbing telephone call informing us of the third death of one of our "regulars" and friends within the last three months. All have taken us completely by surprise, completely out of the blue and completely unexpected - leaving us to say "You never know your last day on earth". Our prayers will continue to be with all the families invloved. We love you, we care about you.

Whilst we all LOVE to cook and serve, we truly treasure the friendships we have made along the way and are grateful for our customers support throughout our journey in this business.

What happened tonight? We were packed. Table after table after table. Non-stop. You can never predict anything in this business. Last night (Tuesday) we sold NOTHING but flounder, salmon and crab cakes. I even threatened to change the name of the restaurant to "The Fish Shack and We Sell Other Things Too". Tonight (Wednesday) we sold everything. We ran out of Alfredo, Filets, Chicken 'n Dumplings, Meatloaf - almost half the menu items. How can you predict? You simply can't. We can only do the best we can do.

So tomorrow morning, quite early I might add, we will be busy 'prepping' for lunch. It is good to be busy again. The winter has been long, lonely at times and slow this year. Night's like tonight help to get us prepared for the spring, summer and fall to come.

We had a Party ... and More!

Good morning to Saturday!

It's the weekend! And at 8am the sun is shining. We were expecting rain, so this is an added bonus! The radar shows only a few clouds that may make their way to us later in the day, but for now it is beautiful. Yesterday afternoon saw torrential rain and hail in some locations, but it all cleared up by 6pm. Most of us in the restaurant business watch the weather forecast. I'm not sure why though. Our sales records indicate that you have a 50-50 chance of being empty or packed when it's pouring rain. Strange, but true.

We hosted a birthday party on Thursday night for a group of 16. We had a great time and I believe the party enjoyed themselves too. When you have a restaurant, it's great to see a group of people have fun. We enjoy cooking for them and serving them. Everyone is in a good mood and ready to party. Thank you ladies for giving us an enjoyable evening and we hope you had a good one too.

We spent yesterday making another batch of pulled pork for the weekend. It sold out last weekend. Several people asked us to do it every weekend. We can't promise it, but it is on the menu today! Coffee braised pulled pork with pineapple upside-down sauce and homemade slaw.

We are still experimenting with our Dipping Hour and hope to have it ready for later this month. Check back for details.

It's Hump Day, Wednesday!

Thank you Lord. We have had two good days on Main Street. Welcoming customers old and new, part-time and full-time residents.

Why is salmon so popular? On Monday night, over 75% of our customers ordered salmon. There is no real planning in the restaurant business. You can only make your best guesses.

Our Norwegian salmon is quite good, but three quarters of the orders for salmon? Tuesday evening brought a more normal mix of Chicken 'N Dumplings, Meatloaf and Crab Cakes plus of couse, more salmon. We offer our salmon with a Lemon-Herb Butter or Blackened.

"Self praise is no praise", grandma always said, but we had some really good stew meat yesterday and our beef stew today is out of this world, if I say so myself. You are always at the mercy of your ingredients however! Loaded with onions, carrots, peas and wild mushrooms, it was really good last night and will only be better today. Available as a lunch portion for $9.95 or a dinner portion for $12.95 (both including soup or salad).

Pulled pork? Oh yes! Several customers asked that we do it as a special every weekend. We have roasted another 20lbs worth that will be a lunch special on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I "taste tested' a couple nibbles yesterday evening, it is great!

Has Spring Sprung?

What a beautiful day we had yesterday. Lots of sunshine, warmer temperatures (still windy, but above 50) and customers old and new. Gov. Perdue was in town but somehow didn't make it to see us. Maybe next time.

The Chicken Chili was a hit yet again, as was our Coffee-Braised Pulled Pork with Pineapple Upside Down Sauce and homemade slaw. The secret to good slaw? Hand shred the cabbage. OK, my arm was sore from shredding all that cabbage on the box shredder, but it sure was worth it. Never cut your cabbage with a knife or buy the pre-cut bags in the grocery store. Hand shredding makes all the difference. It realeases the juices in a way that a knife just doesn't do.

Your've heard about The Witching Hour? Well, this week we will be working on The Dipping Hour with a view to starting it on Monday, March 15 after we change the clocks. We are working on half a dozen dips similar to our crab dip - hot, served with French bread and enough for two (or more) to share. Among the recipes we are perfecting are a Broccoli Cheese, a Bacon and Blue Cheese, a White Bean Dip, a Buffalo Chicken Dip and a couple more. We will have a least three vegetarian options so there will be lots of choice for everyone. Of course the dips will available any time, but we are calling it The Dipping Hour in the hopes that we can get an after-work crowd. Stop in with your friends and share some good times and great food without breaking the bank. We will post when everything is "officially ready" but we are making every effort to start on Monday, March 15. The days will be longer and the weather should have well and truly broken by then.

Warmer Temperatures/Great Food

We are so excited about the warmer temperatures - due to be in the mid-50's today. We hope lots of people will come out and spent most of yesterday cooking in anticipation for the weekend.

At 10am we braised two huge Boston Butts with coffee, brown sugar and our special blend of herbs and spices. Eight hours later, we pulled them out of the oven. Yum!!! We are never traditional, but always delicious. This will be one of today's lunch specials, served on a sesame seed bun with a pineapple-red onion salsa and homemade slaw.

What happened with the chickpea and spinach soup yesterday? Even if I say so myself, it was a good soup and really healthy, but to completely sell out by 2pm was a real shocker. No matter how much you try to plan in this business, forget it. Another batch was made last night. We line our soup cup with fresh spinach, and pour the hot soup over, allowing the spinach leaves to wilt. Yum!

Another Dose of Winter!

Here it is Tuesday evening, March 2. We have been closed all day with yet another winter storm. Oh well, at least it's on a Tuesday this time and not on the weekend.

We will be closed on Wednesday, March 3 and will reopen Thursday, March 4.

Should be almost 60 degrees by the weekend. Yeah!
